This is my easy and completely customizable fruit salad recipe! It takes just 5 minutes to prepare and includes an optional (but recommended!) honey lime dressing.

Easy Fruit Salad Recipe

Just like with mac and cheese or lemonade, you may think you don’t really need a fruit salad recipe. Sure you could just chop and toss your favorite fruits together with perfectly fine results, but if you want truly FANTASTIC fruit salad, you need to try this recipe!

What makes my recipe special:

  • The dressing! I prepare a simple honey lime poppyseed dressing that’s not to be confused with savory varieties like ranch. This tasty and easy “dressing” is a sweet and simple addition that imparts such a lovely, fresh flavor. Last time I served it to guests, everyone was raving about the flavor.
  • Fast: just 5 minutes of prep!
  • Customizable: use any fruit you like, or follow my suggestions (which I recommend you do at least once, the combo shown here really works so nicely together).

Save this salad for your next brunch or potluck, and be prepared to have everyone asking for the recipe!

What You Need

Prepare for a super simple ingredient list: just fruit, limes, honey, and poppyseeds!

  • Fruit. I like to use pineapple, berries, kiwis, and mandarin oranges, but you can really use whatever fruits you like. I talk more about the best fruits to use in the FAQ section below.
  • Lime juice. This is for the honey lime dressing. Just like when making pineapple salsa, you should stick to using fresh limes here. I typically find I need about 2 limes to get 2 tablespoons of juice, but your mileage may vary.
  • Honey. Pretty much any kind will work, so use your favorite. I haven’t tried it, but I think agave would work just as well.
  • Poppyseeds. These add a fun visual element and slight crunch to this recipe, just like in my lemon poppyseed cookies!

SAM’S TIP FOR SERVING TO KIDS: If you are serving this to young kids, cut the grapes into quarters to prevent choking. Also note that children under 1 year old cannot have honey; you could use agave instead or just skip the dressing entirely in this scenario.

How to Make It

  1. Prepare the fruit – Chop your fruit into bite sized pieces and place in a large serving bowl.
  2. Make the dressing – Whisk together the lime juice, honey, and poppyseeds in a separate container.
  3. Toss and enjoy! When you are ready to serve, pour the dressing over the fruit, toss to coat, and enjoy!

SAM’S TIP: You can cut your fruit in different shapes like I did here, or you could instead cut them into smaller, similar sized pieces (like the size of a blueberry!). Both versions taste the same, but cutting the fruit the same size will yield a different look similar to Texas caviar.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I make fruit salad ahead of time?

Yes, although the fruit will soften and get juicy over time, so the appearance won’t be as nice if you do (use a slotted spoon for serving!). Personally, I like to keep everything separate until shortly before serving.

What is the best fruit for a fruit salad?

Fruit you enjoy eating! I like pineapple, berries, kiwis, and mandarin oranges, but you can use whatever fruits you like. Watermelon, mango, dragonfruit, and blackberries are all good options too!

There is one fruit I don’t personally prefer to use though: bananas. They bully all the other flavors and make the whole thing taste like banana, plus they turn brown so fast!

When should I serve fruit salad?

Honestly, this fruit salad recipe is a guaranteed hit at any event! Brunches, baby showers, and bridal showers come to mind for me right away, but it can hold its own among my popular broccoli salad, macaroni salad, and smash burgers at a cookout or picnic too.

Ingredients

Fruit salad

  • 1 lb (453 g) strawberries, tops removed and quartered
  • 3 cups (453 g) chopped pineapple, (typically 1 pineapple for me)
  • 2 cups red grapes, cut in half at equator (10oz)
  • 1 cup (198 g) mandarin orange slices, 7oz
  • 3 kiwis, peeled, cut into slices, and halved
  • 1 ½ cups (226 g) fresh blueberries, 8 oz

Dressing (optional)

  • ¼ cup (60 ml) honey
  • 2 Tablespoons (30 ml) fresh lime juice, I typically need 2 limes for this
  • 1 teaspoon poppy seeds

Instructions 

  • Combine all fruits in a large mixing bowl and toss until well combined.
    1 lb (453 g) strawberries, 3 cups (453 g) chopped pineapple, 2 cups red grapes, 1 cup (198 g) mandarin orange slices, 3 kiwis, 1 ½ cups (226 g) fresh blueberries
  • In a separate small bowl, whisk together honey, lime juice, and poppy seeds until smooth and well-combined.
    ¼ cup (60 ml) honey, 2 Tablespoons (30 ml) fresh lime juice, 1 teaspoon poppy seeds
  • Pour dressing evenly over fruit. Gently stir ingredients together once more to distribute dressing evenly over salad.
  • Serve immediately or cover and refrigerate until ready to serve.

Notes

Storage

Store in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days. Note that the salad will become juicier as it sits and the pineapple will take on some of the red color from the strawberries. When I’m serving this for a party, I’ll typically prepare the ingredients and keep them separate and toss together within an hour of serving, just for best appearance.
